Is Breast Augmentation Permanent?

Woman wondering if breast augmentation is permament against yellow backgroundBreast augmentation is accomplished with silicone or saline implants. Breast implants are medical devices and, while many can last for 10, 15, 20 years or more, they may not last for a lifetime.

Breast augmentation is not considered a permanent procedure, though it can produce results for several years. Dr. Panchal offers advanced breast implant options, including the cohesive gel, “gummy bear” breast implant, which may outlast older options, but even these can eventually fail and require revision or replacement.

Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are filled with a sterile saltwater solution, though the outer layer is still silicone. Because they are filled with a liquid, saline breast implants may eventually ripple, wrinkle, bubble, or fold. They are also more prone to rupture and leak than silicone alternatives. Because of these drawbacks, Dr. Panchal does not typically recommend saline breast implants for new breast augmentation patients.

Silicone breast implants are filled with a viscous gel that tends to look and feel more like natural breast tissue. While rupture is still possible with silicone implants, they are less likely to leak. Cohesive gel options, like the one mentioned above, may not leak at all, even when ruptured, making them the best choice for many patients. Silicone implants will not ripple, wrinkle, bubble, or fold, and tend to last significantly longer than saline options.

The primary drawback to silicone breast implants is that they are filled before they are placed, which may require a slightly larger incision. However, with proper aftercare, this should not pose any issues.

Breast Implant Revision

Breast implant revision may become necessary if one or both of your implants rotates, ruptures, or fails (ripples, wrinkles, etc.) When saline implants were placed initially, it is often best to undergo revision with silicone implants. Many women who choose saline implants for their first procedure elect to have them replaced with silicone options, which can help ensure longer-lasting and more life-like results.

For breast implant revision, it is best to work with a skilled and experienced breast surgeon who offers a range of breast augmentation options to help ensure the best results.
