What Is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a comprehensive combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to improve the shape and appearance of the breasts, abdomen, and waistline. A mommy makeover is all about you, restoring your body to more closely resemble your pre-pregnancy appearance.

Mommy Makeover Norman OK

Like our patients, every mommy makeover is unique. Mommy makeovers are customized to meet your personal goals and can:

  • Save money and recovery time by combining procedures.
  • Reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks.
  • Improve your self-confidence.

Common Procedures in a Mommy Makeover

During your consultation with Dr. Panchal, you will discuss your concerns and aesthetic goals. Depending on your desires and physical characteristics, Dr. Panchal may recommend any of the procedures listed below:

  • Breast augmentation: Most women experience a moderate to significant volume loss in their breasts following pregnancy and nursing. Breast augmentation is designed to replace lost volume with breast implants. It can restore your pre-baby shape or enlarge the size of your breasts.
  • Breast lift (mastopexy): Although many women focus on the size of their breasts, the position and profile can also have a dramatic impact on their appearance. A breast lift can remove excess skin and tighten up the surrounding tissue to produce a "perkier," more youthful look.
  • Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty): Your skin is naturally very elastic. However, it can only take so much stretching before the effects become permanent. Pregnancy often leaves women with excess skin and residual fat around the midsection. A tummy tuck removes surplus tissue to create a smoother, trimmer, flatter waistline.
  • Liposuction: Following pregnancy, many women are left with excess fat deposits around the midsection, thighs, and back. Liposuction is a body-sculpting surgical procedure that removes localized pockets of fat from various parts of your body.
  • Vaginal tightening: Some patients also choose to include non-invasive procedures, such as ThermiVa® vaginal tightening. It uses controlled radiofrequency energy to gently heat vaginal tissue, promoting collagen remodeling.

It is crucial to select the appropriate number of procedures based on your age and fitness level. Dr. Panchal will let you know if you are exceeding safe limits.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

Mommy Makeover Edmond OK

Although plastic surgery is generally very safe, undergoing procedures can cause physical and mental strain. Because mommy makeovers involve multiple surgeries at once, it's crucial to ensure you are a good candidate before proceeding.

Ideal mommy makeover candidates are women who:

  • Are in good health
  • Are at or near their target weight
  • Are no longer breastfeeding
  • Are done having children
  • Don't smoke

There is no perfect age for mommy makeovers. The best time for your procedure depends on when you are physically ready and prepared to invest in your appearance and self-confidence.

Although the desire to have more children in the future doesn't necessarily negate your candidacy, a future pregnancy will have a detrimental effect on your results.

Recovery After Your Mommy Makeover Surgery

After your surgery, Dr. Panchal will administer Exparel, a long-acting local anesthetic, in your incisions. This medication will provide pain relief for up to three days following your surgery. Dr. Panchal will also prescribe medication to control further discomfort during your recovery period.

For breast procedures, your dressings will be removed shortly after your surgery, and you will be given a surgical bra. You may experience discomfort around your nipples for a couple of weeks, but this sensation will eventually subside. Swelling may take three to five weeks to disappear.

Depending on the number of procedures performed, your downtime could last anywhere from two to three weeks. It is essential that you keep someone near you at all times for at least two to three days after your surgery to help with basic daily activities. You will also need to wear a compression garment for six weeks.

After about three weeks, when the swelling starts to subside, you will begin to get an idea of how your new figure will look.

FAQs

Will I Need to Lose Weight Before Having Surgery?

You don't need to be at your absolute lowest weight, but most surgeons recommend reaching a stable, healthy weight before a mommy makeover. Significant weight fluctuations after surgery can affect your results.

If you're considerably above your ideal weight or have health concerns related to obesity, weight loss can reduce surgical risks and improve outcomes. A stable weight also ensures better skin tightening and contouring during procedures like tummy tucks and liposuction.

How Soon After Childbirth Can I Consider a Mommy Makeover?

You should wait at least six months after giving birth before considering a mommy makeover. This allows time for your body to heal, your weight to stabilize, and your hormone levels to return to normal.

If you're breastfeeding, it's also best to wait until you've stopped for at least three to six months, especially before undergoing breast-related procedures.

Can Non-Surgical Treatments Enhance Mommy Makeover Results?

Yes, non-surgical treatments can complement mommy makeover procedures by refining your overall appearance.

Options like laser skin resurfacing, injectable wrinkle treatments, and skin tightening therapies can address lingering concerns. For instance, BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers can smooth facial lines, while treatments like microneedling can help with mild skin laxity.

What Should I Expect in Terms of Scarring?

Scarring is a natural outcome of any surgery, including mommy makeover procedures. However, skilled surgeons like Dr. Panchal make incisions in discreet locations, such as beneath the bikini line or around the areola, to minimize their visibility.

Scars generally fade with proper care and sun protection. Dr. Panchal will provide detailed instructions for scar management during your recovery. Silicone sheets, scar creams, and laser treatments may also help improve their appearance.

While scars can't be completely avoided, they are typically a small trade-off for the long-term improvement in body contours and confidence.

Is It Safe To Combine Multiple Procedures?

Combining procedures is common and generally safe for healthy individuals. A personalized consultation will include a medical evaluation to assess your candidacy.

Limiting the total surgical time to approximately six hours is standard practice to reduce the risk of complications. An experienced surgeon like Dr. Panchal and an accredited surgical facility also enhance safety.
