- Subglandular: Underneath the breasts, but above the muscles of the chest
- Submuscular: Underneath both breast tissue and chest muscle
- Dual Plane: Partially underneath chest muscles, fully underneath the breasts
Subglandular placement may increase risks of capsular contracture, a painful condition in which the scar around the implant hardens. This placement also allows for visible implant imperfections such as ripples, wrinkles, and folds. Due to its lack of support, larger implants placed in the subglandular location may bottom out or cause severe sagging.
Submuscular placement may reduce the risk for capsular contracture. Because this placement hides the implant behind muscles and tissue, implant imperfections are completely obscured, and the additional support helps prevent aesthetic issues like sagging. However, submuscular placement may produce a higher and less natural-looking breast mound in some women.
Dual Plane Breast Implant Placement
At Genesis Plastic Surgery & Medical Spa, our board-certified plastic surgeon has found that the dual plane location for breast implant placement to be the most beneficial. Similar to submuscular placement, dual plane implant placement is capable of reducing risks for both aesthetic and physical discomforts, but allows for a more natural positioning of the breast mound, helping to produce the most pleasing end results.
This, of course, is not the same for every woman. Your natural anatomy, desires and goals, and other factors unique to your breast augmentation procedure will play the largest roles in which technique Dr. Panchal suggests. For some women, this may mean forgoing implants altogether in favor of breast enhancement through fat grafting. This and all other options will be discussed as appropriate during your initial consultation at our Edmond or Norman location.
