Refresh and Brighten Skin with a Melanage Peel

After reading our “After Swimsuit Season” series, you’ve probably got some good ideas about how to manage and maintain a healthy weight – even after the cozy sweaters and long pants come out of storage. While your arms and legs might not be bare at this time of year, your face still is – and it’s arguably the most telling part of your body when it comes to aging.

While you might not be worrying about your sun damaged skin right now, it’s actually the perfect time to start rejuvenating your skin. And for most people, a chemical peel will be just the ticket.

At Genesis, we use the Melanage Skin Brightening system to improve the texture and appearance of skin.

What is a chemical peel, exactly?

A peel is a procedure in which a physician or aesthetician applies a chemical solution to a client’s skin; this solution causes the top layer(s) of skin to “peel” away and give way to new, fresher-looking skin.

For people struggling with melasma or deep pigmentation, uneven skin tone or texture, or scarring: a superficial chemical peel can significantly lighten dark spots, improve skin tone, stimulate collagen production, and diminish fine lines.

At Genesis, we only carry the Melanage system.  Unlike other chemical peel formulations (AHA and TCA, for example), Melanage does not use any kind of corrosive or cytotoxic acids (phenol, for example) to peel off the skin. Instead, the Melanage system loosens the “glue” that holds the outer cells of the outermost layer of your skin together – and it also suppresses melanin production. (Melanin is the primary determinant in your skin color – and it’s a protective pigment produced when your skin is exposed to sunlight.)

What’s the process for having a chemical peel?

The efficacy of the Melanage peel hinges on consistency and a bit of discipline, as the at-home regimen after the in-office application really determines your results.

Before: If you’ve been on Accutane within the past year, have received chemotherapy or radiation therapy, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, you’ll need to hold off on having any chemical peels. Active smokers are more likely to have trouble with the healing process, so you might want to wait until you’ve gone a few months without smoking.

The peel:  An experienced PA or aesthetician will apply a mask – which combines vitamin A and beta-arbutin (a skin brightener) – to your face in-office. You won’t feel any pain or discomfort while the peel is being applied. It only takes about 20 minutes to apply the mask, and you’ll leave the office with the mask still on your face. According to your skin type, you’ll leave the mask on your face for an additional 5 to 10 hours.

After: We’ll give you all the products and instructions you need to do your own at-home skin regimen. Your kit will include a foaming cleanser, anti-redness soothing balm, antioxidant soothing balm sunscreen, and Melanage 2 Créme. The regimen isn’t complicated, but it is extremely important that you follow the instructions precisely in order to safely and effectively go through with the Melanage Skin Brightening System.

You’ll follow this regimen for 8 weeks after your in-office peel, and then you’ll switch over to a 4-week regimen that gives your skin a break from the skin brightening agents.

When you complete the post-peel skin regimen, you will need to continue using a skin brightener and retinol product of your choice – that way, you’ll better maintain your refreshed, brightened complexion.

Give sun-damaged skin a fresh start with the Melanage peel and skin brightening system.

If you want to improve deep pigmentation, melasma, uneven skin tone, or scarring or uneven skin texture, the Melanage system can significantly improve the appearance and overall health of your skin.

Of course, the system isn’t for everyone: if you’re pregnant or nursing; have active cold sores, rosacea, or open acne lesions; have a history of warts; or have recently used Accutane; you’ll want to avoid the Melanage peel.

Genesis makes sure you get the results you want from the Melanage Skin Brightening System – and our experienced PA will apply the peel and follow up with you afterwards. Contact us if you’re ready to try out the Melanage system!
