How Soon After Rhinoplasty Can I Fly?

Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) is a procedure in which the size and shape of the nose are surgically modified to become more complementary to surrounding features. The procedure can be used to address several aesthetic and structural issues affecting the nose, helping to improve both appearance and function.

In recent years, rhinoplasty has become one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the United States.

Rhinoplasty and Flying

In general, it is a good idea to wait for at least one week before flying after nose surgery. Swelling is common for seven to ten days after rhinoplasty, lasting up to three months in some cases. Due to the changes in air pressure, flying can make this swelling worse. It may even increase the risk of long-term swelling, which can, in turn, increase the risk of excessive scar tissue, impacting both comfort and results.

While waiting at least one week to fly after rhinoplasty is necessary, it is recommended you put off flying until swelling has subsided and you have resumed normal activities – typically after three to four weeks. This timeframe can be different for each patient. It is important that you follow the advice of your plastic surgeon to help ensure the most beneficial recovery period.

Advice on Flying After Nose Surgery

If you are an out-of-town patient or if you have travel plans that require you to fly within the first few weeks of recovery, there are certain precautions you will need to take. These include taking a nasal decongestant before takeoff and having a saline nasal spray on hand to help you adjust to changes in pressure. It is important to note, however, that even with these precautions, increased or renewed swelling, which may last for a few days, is common in patients who fly before complete recovery.
