How Long Does it Take to Recover from Tummy Tuck Surgery?

portrait of elegant brunette woman in bed Tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) removes loose and sagging skin from the body’s midsection. Depending on the type of tummy tuck performed, excess fat deposits may be removed, and the abdominal wall may be tightened as well. The latter technique addresses diastasis recti, an issue often related to multiple pregnancies or significant weight fluctuations, and is not necessary for every instance.

The amount of time it takes to recover from a tummy tuck depends on the extent of the procedure. Having additional procedures simultaneously, such as a mommy makeover, will also influence the length of recovery. Because it is highly individual, the best way to accurately determine the length of time you will need for recovery following a tummy tuck is through a private consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeon.

A General Timeline

While each procedure is different and recovery depends on factors including your body’s natural healing response, a general timeline for recovery from a tummy tuck is:

  • Day one through seven: limited activity and rest. During this time, frequent walks are encouraged to assist with blood circulation and reduce swelling, but most other activities must be avoided.
  • Weeks two through four: resuming light work. At this stage, non-demanding tasks can be resumed. These include things like desk jobs and light household duties. Frequent walks are still encouraged during this stage.
  • Weeks four and beyond: gradual resumption of more demanding tasks. By week four, people who have had a mini tummy tuck can typically resume exercising and more demanding jobs, including housework. It may take up to six weeks for individuals who have undergone full tummy tuck to feel comfortable with these more intense tasks. If your procedure has been combined with other body or breast procedures, you may need to wait up to eight weeks to resume physically strenuous activities.

Included in the cost of abdominoplasty at our office are follow-up visits with Dr. Panchal. During these visits, he will evaluate your recovery to help you determine when it is wise to resume specific activities.
