Otoplasty

How Long Does it Take to Recover from Otoplasty?

Otoplasty, ear reshaping surgery, is used to bring the ears into more ideal alignment with surrounding features. With this procedure, Dr. Panchal can adjust the size, shape, position, and projection of the ears, helping to correct aesthetic and structural imperfections and to produce a look that is more emotionally comfortable. One of the only plastic surgery options suitable for children, otoplasty can be performed on patients as young as three and has shown to be useful in decreasing instances of bullying while improving self-confidence and esteem.

Ear Pinning Recovery

In most instances, patients can go back to work or school within five to ten days of ear reshaping surgery. The first week is vital for proper healing, making it important that parents of younger children who have undergone otoplasty take steps to help them keep incisions dry and clean, and to rest enough for the healing process to begin. Adults undergoing the procedure may want to arrange for help during this first week as well to help ensure the best healing response.

While safe to resume working and school after a week or so, it may be several more before your results are finalized. It is important to avoid strenuous exercise for two to three weeks and to avoid contact sports for up to six to help prevent irritating your incisions. During this period, some tenderness is to be expected. Over-the-counter pain medications are typically more than enough to mitigate this concern.

It may be six to eight weeks before your ear reshaping results are finalized. Dr. Panchal is very careful to hide incisions inside and along the natural folds of the ears, helping to reduce risks for visible scarring. You play a role in this as well. Keep your incisions dry and clean, and be sure to avoid blood thinners and vasoconstrictors during the recovery period to help improve results.
