Buttock Lift vs. Buttock Implant

Derriere, bottom, booty, behind: it has many names, but no matter what you call it, the age of larger buttocks is upon us. Celebrities like Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Iggy Azalea and Kim Kardashian have shown women that having a behind is something to be proud of.

There are many ways to create a defined or larger buttocks involving workout regimens or clothing to accentuate back ends. Another way of defining the buttocks is with the process of buttock augmentation. Below, we discuss what a buttock augmentation entails and the options available to patients.

Buttock Augmentation

Buttock augmentation is a procedure that increases the size and contour of the buttocks. This surgery can be done two different ways, including fat grafting from other parts of the body, known as a Brazilian butt lift, implants or a combination of the two.

Buttock Implants

A buttock implant is a procedure where an incision is made either near the top upper buttock, bottom near where the buttock ‘cheeks’ meet the thigh, between the buttock ‘cheeks’ or the crease between the buttocks. After the incision is made, the silicone implant is inserted in or above the muscle on either side of the buttock.

The risks associated with this procedure include abnormal shape, scar formation near the implant and fluid collection. The results from the implants may be visible immediately, with full results noticeable three months after surgery when all swelling has subsided.

Buttock Lift

Commonly known as a Brazilian butt lift, a buttock lift is a surgery where fat is transferred from one area of the body to the buttock area via liposuction. For this procedure, a doctor will look at the love handle, buttock, upper back and lower back areas to determine the amount of liposuction needed to create a distinction between a patient’s lower back and buttock area. After the liposuction is performed, the fat removed is then injected into the outer and central areas of the buttock.

The risks associated with this procedure include excessive amount of fluid if too large an amount of liposuction is used, irregular skin surface and temporary swelling. Following surgery, patients may have slight firmness in the liposuction site and swelling for a few weeks. Patients typically notice optimal results six months after surgery.

Although buttock implants are an option for patients, our team at Genesis Plastic Surgery prefers the buttock lift method of augmentation. With either procedure, it’s important to keep a healthy diet and regular workout regimen to maintain the buttock transformation achieved from surgery.
