Round or teardrop breast implants

Round vs. Teardrop Breast Implants

When planning your breast augmentation procedure, you will have to make important decisions on a variety of options. One choice that will significantly impact your final outcome is the shape of your breast implant.

There are two different implant shapes:

  • Round implants
  • Teardrop implants

During your initial consultation, Dr. Jayesh Panchal will discuss these options with you in detail and recommend the ideal breast implant shape to achieve your desired outcome.

Round Breast Implants

Round breast implants are the most common option for our patients. As the name implies, the breast implant has a round shape.

Round breast implants come in either a smooth or textured shell. A smooth shell allows the implant to move freely in the breast pocket. Textured shells help keep implants from rotating. Textured shells also reduce the risk of capsular contracture, a complication that occurs when scar tissue develops in the breast pocket.

Advantages of round breast implants include:

  • Provide more lift and cleavage
  • Achieve a fuller appearance at the top of the breast
  • Can be used with saline and silicone breast implants
  • In the event of implant rotation, your breasts will retain a natural looking appearance

Teardrop Breast Implants

Teardrop breast implants have a gradual slope to them which mimics the shape of a natural breast. They have a narrower contour on the top than on the bottom. As a result, teardrop implants typically deliver more natural-looking results.

In the event of implant rotation, your breasts would develop an unnatural appearance. To prevent this issue, teardrop breast implants always come in a textured shell. In addition, this shape can only be used with silicone implants since the form-stable cohesive gel is required to ensure the implant retains its teardrop shape.

Advantages of teardrop implants include:

  • More natural looking results
  • Mimic the contours and fullness of a natural breast
  • Ideal solution to restore lost volume caused by weight loss or breastfeeding
  • Deliver excellent results for petite women who don’t have much natural breast tissue
