How Semaglutide and Tirzepatide Work
Semaglutide acts on a hormone pathway called GLP-1, which plays a role in appetite and digestion. Tirzepatide affects GLP-1 as well as a second pathway called GIP. Both may reduce hunger and help you feel satisfied longer after eating, but your experience can vary based on the medication, dose, and how your body responds.
You may recognize semaglutide through the brand name Ozempic®. Our earlier article about semaglutide and Ozempic explains why this drug became part of many weight-loss conversations. Tirzepatide is a separate prescription, and its additional hormone pathway does not automatically make it the better choice for every patient.
Why Results and Side Effects Vary
Your response may be influenced by your starting health, eating patterns, activity level, current prescriptions, and consistency with treatment. Some people lose weight more quickly than others, while certain patients may need a dose adjustment or another approach.
Both drugs can cause digestive symptoms such as nausea, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort. These effects may be more noticeable when treatment begins or the dose changes. Reviewing your medical history beforehand can uncover concerns that affect safety or tolerance.
What Shapes the Recommendation?
A provider will consider more than the number on the scale. Laboratory findings, health conditions, previous weight-loss attempts, prescription use, and past side effects can all influence the decision. A friend’s results cannot show which choice will be safest or most suitable for you.
Our program follows changes in body composition through InBody measurements. This gives us information about body fat, muscle mass, and other markers instead of relying on weight alone. Prescription treatment is only one part of the process, along with food choices, physical activity, and follow-up care.
Medical weight management is also part of our broader nonsurgical medical spa services. If loose skin remains after substantial weight loss, body contouring may become a separate conversation once your weight is stable.
