False – Plastic Surgery for Men is on the Rise

The numbers don’t lie: plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures for men have been increasing exponentially over the past decade. Plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures are stereotypically popular for women, but the desire to look young and fit has no gender boundaries.

Just like women, men have invested in procedures to increase their confidence by enhancing their physical appearance. Both invasive and minimally-invasive procedures have been increasing over the past 10 years.

Confidence for Any Man

Plastic surgery is also becoming more popular for males of all social and financial demographics. Historically, cosmetic procedures for men used to be only associated with celebrities or high-profile persons. Now, men who wouldn’t typically have cosmetic surgery, such as the “man’s man,” are making appointments for procedures that enhance their natural physique.

Cosmetic surgery is also becoming popular for men wanting to become more competitive in the job market. ASPS President Malcom Z. Roth MD says, “The chin and jawline are among the first areas to show signs of aging. People are considering chin augmentation as a way to restore their youthful look just like a facelift or eyelid surgery.” A strong, prominent jawline is subconsciously associated with confidence and authority, especially for men.

Popular Procedures for Men

In 2013, the most common procedures for men in order of popularity:

  • Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty)
  • Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)
  • Liposuction
  • Breast reduction in men
  • Facelift (rhytidectomy)

Not ready to “go under the knife?” Minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures have also been popular among the male demographic in 2013 such as Botox, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion. Some other great non-invasive options to consider are Voluma and Bellafill.
