Upper Lip Lift surgery is a procedure where the skin over the upper lip is removed to evert or flip the lip giving it a youthful appearance.
The procedure can correct:
- Drooping or elongated upper lip secondary to aging
- Lack of vermillion show
- Lack of show of your upper teeth when you smile
Unfortunately, as we continue to age, like so many other parts of your body, everything starts drooping. The lip is no different. As we age, the lip elongates. As it does, the vermillion or the pink part starts slowly fading until you see a thin pink line. The lip progressively gets more vertical and longer hiding your upper teeth when you smile. Sometimes the procedure can be combined with a lip filler injection to further enhance the results of a lip lift.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Panchal can discuss all of your options to help make sure you are provided information on the procedures that will best help you reach your goals.

The best candidates for upper lip lift are
- over the age of 35
- have an increased upper lip height over 20 mm
- do not have their upper teeth visible when smiling
- have a very thin vermillion.
To be a good candidate for upper lip lift, you will need to be:
- A nonsmoker
- In generally good health
- Able to take time off to recover
- Willing to follow all pre and postoperative instructions
There will be care instructions both before and after upper lip lift surgery to reduce risks and speed healing. Failure to follow these can result in unpleasant results, including infection, which may harm healing and scarring. Good candidates for upper lip lift surgery are willing to take all precautions before and after surgery to mitigate these risks. During your initial consultation, Dr. Panchal can discuss this in more detail.
During your initial consultation, we will review your complete medical history. Be sure to check your own records beforehand, so you are ready to provide us with information. Let Dr. Panchal know if you have any allergies, if you are taking vitamins or medications, and if you smoke.
Discuss your goals with Dr. Panchal. He will explain how his technique differs from others and decide whether you need lip lift or a lip filler or a combination of both. He will also tell you the type of anesthesia and where the surgery will be performed. A detailed quote about the estimated costs will be given to you. This will include surgeon’s fees and facility fees.
When performed by Dr. Panchal, upper lip lift surgery is completed under local anesthesia at either one of our three Oklahoma City area offices.
The upper lip lift requires an incision under the nostrils so that the incision when is very well hidden. A bull horn type incision is planned. The height of the incision is based on the extent of the skin resection. Once the skin is excised (removed), the skin edges are approximated and closed in multiple layers. The final skin layer is closed under the skin, so that the stitches will dissolve.
After Your Surgery
After your surgery, your lip may be swollen and bruised. Application of ice and sleeping upright will help to keep the swelling down.
When an upper lip lift surgery is performed by Dr. Panchal, complications are infrequent and usually minor. You may notice that there is some asymmetry or residual swelling. You may feel the sutures over the outside of the skin for a few weeks to a month. During your recovery phase, Dr. Panchal will meet with you for follow up visits. If you have concerns between these visits, we strongly encourage you to call our office right away.
Most people can resume work within seven to ten days of undergoing the upper lift surgery. Due to residual swelling, you may have difficulties eating for a week or so. While work and some routine activities can be performed after ten days, it may be six or more weeks before you are allowed to perform more strenuous exercises. Make sure you wait until you have the go-ahead from Dr. Panchal to begin more demanding activities. During this time, you are encouraged to walk briskly or be on a stationary bike to prevent weight gain and other health problems linked to inactivity.
