As we age and are exposed to the sun, our skin and the fat over our face tends to sag. This has more of an effect in the mid-face (cheek area) and results in nasolabial folds – laugh lines from the side of the nose to the lips. Some men develop jowls and in others the neck tends to sag.
The fat in the mid-face tends to drop vertically down, resulting in a deflated face. Rhytidectomy, or a face lift, cannot reverse the results of aging but can certainly turn the clock back, making you look a decade younger.
All facelifts are not equal. In the past, facelifts have been associated with the stigma of a tight and stretched face. It was as if men and women with facelifts could be recognized a mile away at a party.
The good news is that things have changed. Facelifts are now done very differently: the downtime is reduced to a week and surgeons do less but achieve more. A facelift done by Dr. Panchal has minimal to near-invisible incisions after surgery. The predominant correction of sagging is vertically up so that your face looks full, not stretched. It is as if a decade has been taken away from your face.

What Happens During Facelift Surgery?
Dr. Panchal performs a specific type face lift that is called Naturale face lift. This facelift usually takes 3-4 hours or longer if the surgery is coupled with other procedures.
The incision is placed barely into your hairline, so that it is not visible after surgery. The incision begins from the cartilage in front of the ear and continues behind the ear along the hairline behind the ear.
Dr. Panchal will then lift the skin and fat under the skin. Next, he will tighten the fascia (or muscle) to give the face a tighter, younger look. This allows the results of the facelift to last longer. He will also trim any excess fat and loose skin.
In some cases, Dr. Panchal will place an additional incision underneath the chin to improve the contour of the neck. This incision allows for correction of the loose skin in the neck, removal of the excess fat underneath the neck and tightening of the neck muscles. This results in a dramatic improvement in the contour of the neck. All the stitches are placed under the skin and therefore, do not need to be removed.Dr. Panchal will place a small drain at the main incision sites, which will be for a few days after surgery.
Dr. Panchal performs facelifts at his office under local anesthesia and oral sedation. If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, you may need to stay overnight for a night.
Your facelift will be performed under local anesthesia and sedation if you have a Naturale face lift.
What Are the Risks of Facelift Surgery?
When Dr. Panchal performs a facelift, the complications are infrequent and usually minor. In rare cases a hematoma, or collection of blood, may develop. If a hematoma develops, you may require an additional surgery to remove the blood clot. It is possible to have some temporary asymmetry due to swelling, but this will resolve itself after a few weeks.
Smoking before or after surgery certainly increases the risk of complications, so it is recommended that you do not smoke before or after any surgery.
After Your Surgery
After your surgery, there will be some swelling on your face. The swelling can be reduced by applying ice and sleeping in an upright position. Facelifts are less painful relative to other surgeries. Dr. Panchal will also prescribe you pain medication.
After surgery, there may be some asymmetry that results from more swelling on one side than the other. This will resolve itself after 10 days when the swelling begins to subside. It is also possible that you may experience some numbness after surgery, but this will also resolve itself.
Dr. Panchal will attach a drain to the incision site in order to drain excess fluid. This will be removed 1-2 days after surgery.
Returning to Normal Life
You will be able to move around on your own 1 day after surgery, however, your face will be sore and swollen. It may take 10 days to 2 weeks for the swelling to subside. After 2 weeks, you can walk briskly. However, you should wait 4-6 weeks for higher intensity aerobic exercise.
Your New Look
As the swelling subsides, you will start seeing the results of your facelift surgery. You will see that your profile is more defined and youthful.
