Lipodissolve: Does it work?

What is Lipodissolve or Mesotherapy?
Lipodissolve or Mesotherapy is a popular but scientifically unproven technique where a chemical is injected into areas where you wish to have the fat dissolved.

How is it performed?
After an evaluation by a “physician” an injection of two chemicals phoshotidyl choline and sodium deoxycholate is injected into the area. The injections are performed in the office and do not require any specific anesthesia. Generally multiple injections are performed until the “desired result is obtained”.

Is there scientific evidence to prove that it works?
There is very limited scientific evidence that it works. There are only 14 references in the English literature and each of these studies is of very low validity and quality.

Does FDA approve its use?
No, FDA does not approve the use of this therapy. Long term effects of the two chemical drugs are unknown and the FDA does not approve the use of these chemicals for fat reduction. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons Health Policy Committee Chairman Petra Schneider-Redden MD stated “Practicing mesotherapy in the US is a highly controversial subject, due in large part to the absence of the main ingredients – and the ingredients being used are not FDA-approved for such a purpose”. In fact on March 12 2008, the Kansas Board of Healing Arts voted to prohibit mesotherapy and on Feb 19, 2008, Nebraska Legislature introduced a bill that prohibits the use of mesotherapy in the state.
